Having spent countless hours roaming the streets of Manhattan by bike and by foot, one thing I’d never done until today was take to the pavement early. This morning I had the absolute pleasure of heading into the city in the wee hours and practicing morning sadhana at RA MA NYC. It was an incredible session and made me realize that I’ve been to very few in-studio classes outside of trainings and festivals, so this was an extra special setting for this full moon and Guru Purnima. I was the only in-person student this morning (they stream online too), and as I arrived in the lower east side around 3:45 am it was fun to see everyone out getting pizza fresh from the club and making plans for the afters, a side of this hour I too have seen many times!
I’ll utilize the plug of this post to emphasize the absolute brilliance of rising with or before the sun. For me the quiet hours of the morning are unmatched, and getting going before the buzz gets going is oh so sweet. These hours encompass the Amrit Vela and correspond to Vata and Kapha.
In addition to crisp morning air and ample peace, it came to my attention that this is the best time to go graffiti watching, when all the gates are closed to see what’s thrown on em and with less distractions the art stands out, little details appear. Two of my favorite art forms are interviews and graffiti, and there happened to be a little 7th Letter zine in a cafe called Ludlow with some awesome interviews from top artists. I love hearing people’s stories, and am extra fascinated when it comes to worlds and ways of living that are so unknown to me, especially the ones that hold a certain ‘rawness’. I’ve always loved spray paint but could never fathom tagging, but nonetheless am consistently inspired by street art and think its one of the best things cities have to offer. Leave it to the professionals I say. *Edit, for now… Haha. Anyway, here's some photos. Hope you enjoy x
